There are still plenty of local events to catch before summer wraps up. Here’s a list of upcoming events you don’t want to miss this August.

International Surf Festival

For the surf festival, the Beach Cities come together to celebrate surfing and the beach. This will be the 62nd International Host Festival, this year hosted by the City of Torrance. The festival promotes the Beach Cities, the lifeguard service and fitness. The festival features three signature events: the Judge Taplin Lifeguard Medley Relay, the Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim and the Charlie Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Tournament. There are also other events to enjoy throughout the festival, including a surfing contest, bodysurfing contest, beach run, paddleboard races, dory race and youth events.

DineLA Restaurant Week

If you are interested in checking out some of the best fine-dining restaurants at reduced rates, get ready for DineLA Restaurant Week. There are plenty of restaurants (including Michelin-recognized spots) participating in offering prix fixe menus at reduced prices. Torrance Theatre Company Presents “Something Rotten”

The Torrance Theatre Company will be bringing a production to the stage in August, with multiple opportunities to catch “Something Rotten,” a comedic play set in the 1590s that follows two brothers looking to write a hit play. Check out more information here.

AltaSea Open House, Featuring Captura

If you are interested in learning more about the next wave of environmental technology, this event is for you. Hosted by AltaSea in San Pedro, this open house invites the community to learn more about climate technology company Captura and their ocean-based carbon removal methods. Captura uses renewable energy and advanced electrochemical methods to remove carbon dioxide from seawater, enabling the ocean to absorb more from the atmosphere.

Movie In The Park: “The Wild Robot”

The final installment of the City of Rancho Palos Verdes’s “Movies in the Park” summer series is almost here. Join this family-friendly event for a viewing of 2024 film “The Wild Robot.”

Hermosa Beach Triathlon

This year’s Hermosa Beach Triathlon is back this August. Join others in this quarter-mile ocean swim, 10-mile bike ride and three-mile beach run. Check out more information here.

28th Annual Celebrate Wellness Gala

Cancer Support Community South Bay is celebrating 38 years of supporting people emotionally and socially through their cancer journeys. Their annual fundraising event is back, featuring KTLA host Wendy Burch. Expect dinner, dancing, entertainment, live and silent auctions and inspiring stories. All proceeds raised through the gala go towards supporting cancer patients. Check out more details here.

Catalina Island Excursion

Beach Tennis Tournament

If you’re looking for an active summer activity, you might want to check out the Beach Tennis Tournament in Hermosa Beach. There are plenty of events, including men’s and women’s singles, open doubles and various experience levels. See more information and register here.

We Are One Fundraising Concert

This event, hosted at the California Surf Club in Redondo Beach, will feature more than 25 local musicians performing to help raise money for other musicians. Check out more information and get tickets here.

Palos Verdes Library District: Canvas Concert with Mimi Jung and Katheryn Klein

This special performance by violinist Mimi Jung and pianist Katheryn Klein will also feature a visual art performance. Artist Zach Vargas will do a live painting during the performance, and volunteers are welcome to paint, as well. Check out more information here.
