Intuitive Touch Massage and Wellness “I feel your pain”

by Eric Smith

Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But People will never forget how you made them feel.” This is most certainly true in my field and Intuitive Touch Massage and Wellness does just that. Our clients feel rejuvenated, energized, relaxed and pain or tension is dramatically decreased.  How do we do this? Here are just a few of the body work therapies we offer.

Cupping Therapy:

Cupping therapy is an adaptation of ancient techniques and possess the benefits of traditional use. This therapy utilizes glass or plastic cups and a controlled vacuum to create suction on the body surface. These cups are moved over the skin using gliding, shaking, popping, and rotating techniques while gently pulling up on the cups or are “parked” for a short amount of time to facilitate joint mobilization or soft tissue release. This suction reaches deep into the soft tissue, attachments, and organs. It also has a sedating effect on the nervous system. Another benefit is to pull inflammation and toxins from the body tissues so that the skin and lymphatic system can eliminate them.  Cupping enables water absorption and renewed blood flow to undernourished and dehydrated tissue by lifting and separating the tissue layers.

Some of the benefits of cupping include increased circulation and range of motion due to increased connective tissue mobility and reduced muscle tension. Cupping also increases lymphatic drainage to assist detoxification.

Cupping therapy has been proven to help conditions such as Sciatica, ITB syndrome, muscular aches, TMJ dysfunction, arthritis, trigger points, plantar fasciitis, post injury or surgery  and many more.

Determining how often to receive cupping varies from case to case. Typically, it depends on how the client reacts to the treatment. It should not be done every day. It is important to give the body time to process. In general, a minimal wait of 48 – 72 hours is preferable.

Some people do not like the marks left from cupping. While they technically are not bruises, the marks may last 3-7 days dependent upon the skin, stagnant matter being released, and length of time left in place (static cupping). You are less likely to have marks with flash and glide cupping. People describe the sensation differently from soothing, stimulating, energizing, warming, tingling, and separating to comparing it with deep tissue. Cupping does should not hurt if done correctly. Pre-natal cupping is indicated if the cups are not placed on the abdomen or lumbar areas.

Pulmonary Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)

Properly stretching the muscles is particularly important whether you are athletic, have a physically demanding job, or sedentary job and lifestyle. A trained professional can assist by focusing on the target muscles. Stretching with elongate and strengthen the muscles and nerves, improve circulation and joint mobility, plus assists with recovery from injury or surgery.

Deep Tissue

Deep tissue massages are exactly that: Deep. A massage therapist may use their knuckles, forearm, hands, and elbows to elongate the muscle tissue and fascia slowly and firmly, causing a slight discomfort for those who have never experienced a deep tissue massage before. Initial the treatment can leave you feeling quite sore. Drink plenty of water, have a healthy meal and a good night’s sleep. The next day you will feel much looser with improved flexibility. Deep tissue massage can drastically improve the circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Improving the body’s ability to “detox” itself. Deep tissue massage can improve pain and flexibility in other parts of the body, not just the area that you believe is the root of your problems.

Muscle “knots” are bundles of fibrous tissue that have been dormant for a while. Releasing the tension in them and softening them up comes with some level of discomfort. Don’t worry, I love your feedback and will allow you to dictate when to go harder or softer. If a certain technique is too uncomfortable, be sure to tell me. I generally work on a 1- 10 scale to judge the depth of the pressure and communication is important.

Deep tissue massage can improve the quality of your sleep and is ideal for controlling anxiety and depression. It is also the perfect form of recovery for athletes and fitness fanatics. Deep tissue massage is the great tool for injury prevention by giving elasticity back to the muscles. Long, flexible muscles and highly mobile joints can perform better on the field but with a lower risk of injury.

Swedish Massage

Not only can Swedish massage be used to ease pain as a result of an injury or muscle tension, but it can also be used to manage chronic pain that comes with a number of illnesses and conditions, such as arthritis or fibromyalgia. By decreasing pain, Swedish massage can help patients relax, which can improve overall health and recovery. The long gliding stokes are wonderful for stress relief and relaxation physically, emotionally, and psychologically.

Better circulation not only helps you feel better but improves overall health since increased circulation and blood flow means other organs can work more effectively.

There is scientific evidence of the health benefits of massage therapy. A large, three-year study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management examined how massage affected pain, fatigue, stress and anxiety, nausea, and depression in 1,290 people with cancer. The study showed massage, especially Swedish massage, improved cancer symptoms, even in those with substantial symptoms. Researchers believe the comforting use of human touch played a role.

Massage may give your immune system a boost. According to a 2010 study, a single session of Swedish massage therapy had a positive and acute impact on immunity. Blood samples taken before and after the massage showed a decrease in arginine-vasopressin, a hormone that helps regulate blood pressure and water retention.

Hot Stone Massage

Like Swedish, hot stone massage Helps relieve muscle tension and pain. Heat has long been used to ease muscle tension and pain. It helps increase blood flow to the affected area. It may also reduce muscle spasms and increase flexibility and range of motion. Cold therapy helps relieve inflammation. Depending on your symptoms, alternating hot and cold stones during your massage may be helpful.

Hot stone massage reduces stress, anxiety, promotes sleep and may help decrease cancer symptoms associated with stress, anxiety and fatigue.
