A New Look for the Gerald Desmond Replacement Bridge

by Steve Tabor

The Port of Long Beach recently presented the Gerald Desmond Replacement Bridge (Bridge) new night lighting scheme.  The LED lights are capable of lighting the 515-foot twin towers and the 80 suspension cables in 27 different color schemes.  The lighting schemes reflect such holidays as Independence Day, Christmas and Hanukkah.  In addition, the lights will be used to celebrate special events such as the Olympics, Pride Month and even the Dodgers recent World Series crown.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event was held virtually and those interested in the event were encouraged to view the event online utilizing the Port of Long Beach’s webcams.

Frank Colonna, President of the Long Beach Harbor Commission, explains, “A lighted bridge should offer hope for a brighter 2021 and beyond.  These magnificent lights shine on our city as a beacon of hope.”

“We know that the Port of Long Beach is incredibly important to our local and national economy.  Thousands of people depend on these good paying jobs.  This bridge connects us to our neighborhoods in Los Angeles and across the country.  We couldn’t be more excited that this bridge is going to light up every single night.  This will be very visible as folks come in and out of our great city,” exclaims The City of Long Beach Mayor, Robert Garcia.
