SEVEN MAGICAL FUN-DA-MENTALS

BY SHELLEY STOCKWELL-NICHOLAS, PhD

I am sure that you agree; NOW is the time to put the fun back in the mental. These seven  fun-d-mental principles make your life better… Even the bumps on life’s road will seem smoother. So read them and reap.

1. LOVING KINDNESS TO YOU.

Goodwill towards yourself makes dreams come true. Self-directed praise goes a long way. Research shows that loving-kindness is “dose-dependent;” the more kind and loving you are toward yourself, the more kind loving and loved you feel. So, live it up and say something nice to yourself right now… Go ahead do it!

Your good-will within makes it easier to focus goodwill toward another. So, just for the fun of it, send loving kindness to another. Expect nothing in return except the good feelings within you. Go ahead do!

Now, if you want to be outrageously brave, focus loving kindness toward someone you find difficult to be around. Surprise! Your kindness just may magnetize reciprocity. What goes around comes around. So live it up and show yourself and others loving kindness and smile.

2. KEEP IN TOUCH

Touch is a primary way to communicate, from a simple handshake to a pat on the back, touch soothes and helps us to feel good. Get a massage and rub your own hands or feet. Give yourself the same touch you might give a pet. Or, enjoy actually petting a dog or cat. If you don’t have one, “borrow” a friend’s or go to an animal shelter.

Hold someone’s hand. Give someone a hug and hug like you really mean it.  Science shows that a good hug reduces blood pressure, soothes anxiety, and releases “love” hormones like oxytocin.

3. BE INTERESTED

Walt Disney said it well; “When you’re curious, you find lots of interesting things to do.” Curiosity opens you to learn new and wonderful things. Stay open and interested in everyone and everything and enjoy the magic that unfolds.

4. HANG OUT WITH NOURISHING PEOPLE

Befriend and do things with people who bring you up… not down. Nourishing people are refreshing. They foster trust, self-respect, and appreciate YOU. Successful people help you rise to their level and beyond.

5. ASK FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Say inside yourself or aloud; “Happy.” “Peaceful.” “Healthy.” “Abundant.” Your mindful requests for joy bring it on. Then ask others for what you want. Most people are not mind readers so if you don’t tell them how will they know what you want or need. Of course, you need to ask yourself first “What do I need” in order to ask.

6. THINK; THEN SPEAK

It’s near to impossible to push words back into your mouth once you let them out. They seem to hover in the air. So be mindful of the words you choose and use. Pause and THINK before you speak. Be clear on your intention because your intention is often louder than the words themselves. Ask yourself, “what outcome would I like my words to evoke?”

7. BE AWE INSPIRING

Think about the amazing fact that you are alive and reading this. You’re a miracle. Your very existence at this time and place is a miracle. Witness yourself the same way you might stand dumb struck with the beauty of Palos Verdes or one of our glorious sunsets. Let the concert of your breath blow your mind. Just the idea that you are perfectly alive is an AWESOME gift. Now affirm:

DR SHELLEY’S AWESOME MEDITATION FOR MAGIC: “Get comfortable and tune into your breathing. Inspiration… Relaxation… Each easy breath sends rhythm to your body and mind. Notice the rhythm and relax more and more with each easy breath. Let your breathing breathe you. In-joy and out-joy with each breath.

Now, become aware of your heart beating. Each energizing pulse relaxes you more and more. Smile. Enjoy your breath and the rhythm of your heart. Enjoy your body. Your body has been your home for some time now and a true, loyal friend. Like any good friend, you want to do good and kind thing for it so, take in a delicious full breath and relax your body even more. Enjoy this moment with its sensations, smells, tastes, sounds and sights. This time is for YOU. Now place your hand on your heart and say ‘I am love.’ Yes, YOU are!”
