To the Ocean I Go to Lose My Mind and Find My Soul

By Lena Milos

It was a beautiful morning and I had the beach all to myself. As the sun was rising, shimmering gold hues of warm light reflected across the sand. I took a deep breath and inhaled the salty ocean air. As I slowly exhaled, I felt all my worries disappear. Walking along the shore, my feet sank into the wet sand as the oceans waves splashed. With every breath I took I felt better, I was calm, happy, and at peace. I was in the moment, and appreciating all its worth.

It was the first time that I had stepped foot on the beach in weeks. I realized I hadn't felt like this in so long. I felt a renewed sense of energy. I closed my eyes and let the suns warmth embrace me.  I needed this dose of what I call Vitamin Sea. What was it about the beach that made me feel so good?

Just listening to the ocean has healing benefits. Research shows the sounds of the ocean send a soothing signal to the brain and increase feelings of peace and calm, enabling you to block everything else out. Goodbye worries.

Soaking up the sun also promotes good health. Not only does it feel great, and give me that sun kissed glow that I love, the sun is a great source of Vitamin D. Studies suggest that Vitamin D  helps prevent certain cancers, osteoporosis ,depression, fatigue and improves cognitive health. Hello sunshine.

Taking a refreshing swim in the ocean feels great. It's been shown that saltwater boosts your immune system by  increasing your red and white blood cell production, helping to fight off infections and viruses.  It contains a variety of minerals which can help with anemia, blood sugar, and insomnia, promoting a good night's sleep. Ever notice how well you sleep after a day at the beach?!

Enjoying time along the shore can also do wonders for your state of mind. It really helps put things into perspective. From calm seas to turbulent storms, life is like the ocean, going through constant change. It's been said that sometimes in the waves of change we find our true direction.

It  wasn't until recently, when I hadn't hit the beach in a few weeks that I understood just how important that dose of Vitamin Sea really is . I will no longer feel guilty or take for granted, the hours spent swimming in the sea, soaking up the sunshine, and hunting along the shore for treasures. I will continue to stroll along the coast at our local beaches to photograph and capture all the magic and beauty our peninsula has to offer.  To the ocean I go, to lose my mind and find my soul...

Coastal, Nature, and Landscape Photography. Originally from Germany, but raised in the South Bay. I’ve been living in San Pedro for over 20 years, and I still can't stop thinking, what a picturesque town I live in! There is nothing I love more than capturing the beauty that surrounds me and being able to transport others to that same place. It's just too beautiful here not to share it! Sunset is by far my favorite color, as it is ever changing, and it’s also one of my favorite times to photograph. Mother Nature really knows how to put on a show here. I hope you enjoy my photography, and it brings to you the same vibrant mood and energy that I'm feeling while out shooting and enjoying the beauty our peninsula has to offer. When i am not out shooting the sunset you will most likely find me at the beach, strolling our coastline for treasures like sea glass and shells. I am sea glass obsessed and i don't want to stop the hunt, so I have created an ocean inspired jewelry line , to turn some of these local finds into wearable jewelry fit for any mermaid at heart.
