A February Salute to Fairy Tale Cinema

by Greg Schreiner

February is the month for love and valentines and what better movie tribute than a salute to fairy tale cinema.  And, in particular, the role of the Prince who always gets his princess in the end, be it Snow White or Cinderella.  Here we feature three prince costumes that reflect the glory of brilliant costume design.

First is this stunning costume worn by Armie Hammer as Prince Charming in “Mirror, Mirror”  2012.  The designer is Eiko Ishioka, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her work on this film.  The costume consist of a gold brocade outer coat with matching gold brocade pants and an ivory and gold waistcoat.  No wonder that Snow White cannot resist the charms of the handsome Mr. Hammer wearing this stunning creation.

The equally handsome Ricard Chamberlain as Prince Edward wowed Cinderella in this beautiful costume by designer Julie Harris in the 1976 movie, “The Slipper and the Rose”.  This costume features incredible gold embroidery on the jacket and vest with matching embroidery on the cuffs and gold buttons accenting the jacket.

Another Cinderella movie was the 1955 movie, “The Glass Slipper” featuring Michael Wilding as Prince Charles opposite Leslie Caron as Cinderella.  The costume designers were Walter Plunkett and Helen Rose.  Again the coat is made of a stunning gold brocade.  What distinguishes this costume are the oversize button which are studded with gold chips to create a dazzling effect on the silver screen.  Complimenting this costume is a tri corner hat of black velvet accented with ostrich feathers.
