Prestigious “Excellence in Historic Preservation” Medal Awarded to Long Beach Couple

by Patricia Mendez

The Point Vicente Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution awarded it’s first “Excellence in Historic Preservation” medal to chapter member Britton Weber and her husband Skip. The couple has restored their beautiful 1906 American Foursquare-style home. This was a very popular design in homes around the turn of the 20th century. This style incorporates elements of Edwardian, Prairie and Craftsman styles. Hallmarks of this style include a square shape, two stories and four rooms per floor, a large front porch, chipped roof, built-in cabinetry and Craftsman-style woodwork.

The outside of the home had fallen into disrepair and was refurbished by the Weber’s. The work included restoring the two original Corinthian columns that supported the balcony, a re-roof, front balcony work and painting the home with period paint colors on the original redwood clapboard siding.

The interior restoration included restoring the finish on the original fir floors and repairing some of the plaster walls and painting the walls. The kitchen was remodeled in the original style and the home furnished with attractive, antique Craftsman furniture, accessories, antique rugs, decorative art and period lighting.

This home is a fine example of an attractive and quality historic preservation effort that succeeded in bringing back the home to its former glory as it adds to the charm of its Long Beach neighborhood.
