10 Things That Improve the Guest Experience

By Stephanie Boyd, Certified Professional Organizer

Guest rooms don’t have to be large or fancy, they don’t even have to be dedicated guest spaces. The room doesn’t define the guest experience; the time spent with you, the memories made and the ease of the stay are the things that have the most impact. There are simple things you can do to make your guest space comfortable, functional and effortless for your visitors.

1) Place for Luggage

This makes life so much easier!

Provide someplace other than the floor for luggage; it can be a folding luggage rack, a chair, or even a small table.

2) Hooks

You can never have too many hooks. They can be placed anywhere. You don’t want your guests to have to use the floor for anything – hooks help. These are great in bathrooms and bedrooms, on walls, behind doors and even added to closets.

3) Mirror

It’s much easier for guests to dress and get ready if there is a mirror in the guest room. This is especially helpful if the guest bathroom is a shared bathroom; the mirror allows your guests to get ready in the room itself without feeling like they are monopolizing the bathroom.

4) Tissues

Little boxes of wonderful – provide a box in every bathroom and bedroom.

5) Wastebasket

Provide a lined wastebasket in all bathrooms of course, but also in bedrooms. Most guests are self-conscious of being neat and not leaving a mess, the lining in the baskets or cans makes it easy to clean up when the visit is done.

6) Towels

Dark colors are more forgiving and stress free for everyone. If I were to get make-up on a white towel that wasn’t mine I would feel awful. I don’t think I’m alone here. Save the fluffy white towels for display or family use.

7) Hangers

Have a selection of hangers in the guest room. Even if you don’t have a closet in the room where your guests stay, have hangers on the hooks so they can hang a few items. You don’t have to break the bank, but please don’t leave wire hangers for your guests. As a guest, I’ve used hangers for my bath towel when the guest bathroom is a shared bathroom – this way I can keep my towel separate and fresh.

8) Drawers

An open drawer or two is a nice touch in a guest space. Even if your guests don’t plan to unpack their clothing, it’s nice to have a place to put jewelry, sunglasses, wallet and keys without cluttering the tops of surfaces.

9) Toiletries

Most guests will bring their own, but what a treat it is to try new lotions, soaps and shampoos. I have been introduced to some great products this way. Individually packaged make-up remover wipes, travel toothpaste, lotions and body wash are great to provide.

10) Small Appliances

Let your guests know if a hair dryer and iron are available for them to use, and where they can find them.

Your guests will be appreciative of your hospitality just by virtue of opening your home to them. These simple tips add a level of convenience, which makes their stay effortless and therefore more comfortable.
