The Good Citizens Award rewards high school seniors who demonstrate the qualities of a good citizen, such as dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Judging is based on academic achievement, community service and a personal essay.

Described by a teacher as “one of the most influential students in the school," Dheeriya displays a strong commitment to improve both his local and the global community through his academic and philanthropic pursuits. Beyond excelling in his academic career with a 4.0 GPA, Dheeriya hopes to combine his interest in physics and public policy to make the world a more informed and better place.

"Kapil shows great initiative and determination in leading by example," said Alta Graham, Point Vicente Chapter Regent. "Having volunteered with several political campaigns, serving as a mentor for incoming freshmen, coaching youth water polo, and recruiting volunteers for the Palos Verdes Land Conservancy, Kapil is an inspiration to all and we wish him the best of luck in the future."

Dheeriya’s essay lost out at the National level to Arjun Garapaty from Kansas, while the female National winner is Katherine Tian of New York. The three Point Vicente DAR Good Citizens from other local high schools were Kelsie Groenleer from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, Mia Helena Sestich from San Pedro High School and Cheryl Razonable from Mary Star of the Sea High School.

All four Point Vicente Chapter winners will receive a DAR Good Citizen pin, certificate, wallet recognition card, and a $250 scholarship award at their school’s annual senior awards ceremonies.
