El Segundo Blue Butterfly Nature Visit at Vicente Bluffs

Join the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy for a visit to Vicente Bluffs with a chance to view the El Segundo blue butterflies (ESBB) during their flight season. Take a guided stroll with Conservancy Biologist Austin Parker and Volunteer Coordinator and native plant expert Megan Wolff through restored coastal sage scrub habitat along the coastal bluffs that is the unique home to the El Segundo blue butterfly (ESBB).

July is the peak time when the restored sea-cliff buckwheat plants are blooming along the coastal bluffs.  Sea-cliff buckwheat is the ESBB host plant. Vicente Bluffs Reserve is part of the 1,400 Palos Verdes Nature Preserve owned by the City of RPV with habitat managed by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy.  The Conservancy removes invasive weeds and plants sea-cliff buckwheat to provide both new locations for the El Segundo to lay their eggs and to provide food plants for the endangered species.  A special restoration site has been maintained by a dedicated group of Conservancy Adopt-a-Plot volunteers for the past six years and is showing great results.

Tuesday, July 13th at 3 pm Vicente Bluffs Reserve.  Parking available at Point Vicente Lighthouse and Interpretive Center 31501 Palos Verdes Dr. West, RPV
