Fine Art Photography By Jill Sanders – The Therapeutic Power of Natural Beauty

By Jill Sanders

Jill Sanders is a local fine art landscape photographer born and raised here in Palos Verdes, California. Her images stir a sense of stillness and peace upon the viewer as she blends her painterly effects of light and shadow mixed with long exposure techniques.

The power of imagery can pacify anxious thoughts and this objective has guided Jill’s journey. She opened Jill Sanders Gallery in Redondo Beach in 2015 feeling that her photographs were best viewed in person as opposed to the subculture world of online viewing. Creating an in person zen viewing space compliments the incredible imagery she has captured.

Jill lived and studied in NYC in the late eighties/early nineties and received a BFA in Photography from Parson’s School of Design in 1991. She has traveled extensively throughout her career to broaden her social perspective of our planet as well as document the infinite beauty that it offers.

As a child, Jill grew up with a mother that was bed ridden with Multiple Sclerosis. She will always share that watching someone close to you not have the choice to move has forever inspired her wanderlust. Jill has also battled many physical obstacles herself. She had a brain tumor removed at the age of 28 and various other surgeries throughout the years. She claims that these are all physical scars and not mental deterrents…use what you have.

All of these scars one has endured, whether physical or emotional, are colors in her palette. The depth of one's creativity is tested by what they have mentally processed. The mind is infinite and ever expanding. She took these lessons and challenges head on and proudly wears her “bad ass” medal of personal honor. She shows how we must seek the focus of resilience in order to truly see and experience the true beauty of our spirit.

This past summer, Jill and her husband,Graham, trekked up to Yosemite to work on a project titled , “Sublime Power”. It is an image study based on the hypnotic power of Yosemite falls. She zooms in with a 600 prime lens to capture the focused details and linear abstracts of the eternal flow of water contrasting against wet granite. The permanence of these walled structures heavily shadows our own existence. She parallels the obstacles that she has endured with the sculpting power of the waters edge. Resilience creates a canvas of etched beauty.

Jill has also been working on a local project which highlights the minimal tones and shapes of our local seascapes. A spouting horn, lone cave, swirling tide, all offer hidden messages that breathe the purity and secrets of nature. Our own backyard offers the perspective that so many of us seek in far away lands.

The world is filled with the promises of tomorrow and when looking deeper one can also read the stories of the past. The two mindsets take one meditatively into oneself. This is where the true beauty lies…the acceptance of your role in this beautiful global imagery.

The lessons one learns in school are just tools to help truly discover your own life lessons.

Jill promotes to always be open to the abstract teachers on one’s path.

Art is healing. Art is a calling.
