Always Let Your Inner Sparkle Shine - Happy National Unicorn Day!

By Sheri Fink

I’ve always loved mythological creatures and magical worlds. I also love hidden messages tucked into art that empower the viewer to believe in themselves. That’s why I write social-emotional learning books about whimsical characters like self-doubting unicorns, adventurous gnomes, helpful fairies, misunderstood monsters, and dancing dragons that inspire empathy and exploration.

My most popular book, The Little Unicorn, is about a rainbow unicorn that lives in an enchanted forest powered by the magic of her unicorn sparkle. But when she mysteriously loses her sparkle, the magic within her and of the forest starts to disappear. She sets off on a journey to rediscover her sparkle only to end up finding it in the place she least expected, but perhaps secretly knew all along. I wrote the book to empower kids to learn not to seek validation outside of themselves and to instead develop their inner confidence.

Writing books can be difficult, especially children’s books. Crafting the ideal children’s book can be daunting because it’s a bit of an art and a science to create a story that continues to engage the reader while imparting something special that they can discover about themselves through the story. Sometimes the words just won’t flow no matter how hard you try. That’s the way I felt when I first attempted to write The Little Unicorn years ago. At the time, I was inspired to write beyond the children’s genre and I ended up choosing to set it aside for a while I focused on writing other books that flowed more easily to me in the moment.

Fast forward a few years later and my husband asked me what my biggest writing regret was. I thought for a moment and shared that I had started writing a unicorn book that I never finished, but always wanted to. He encouraged me to pull it out of the drawer and finish it. I reread my draft and ended up starting over from scratch.

When I finally had a story I was proud of, I released the book and it became my best-selling title ever. It’s definitely better than it would’ve been if I had rushed to release it years ago. It’s the book that I’m the proudest of because it was the hardest to write and had the longest journey to being published.

The message of the story is that just like the Little Unicorn, you can create magic when you believe in yourself and cherish your friends. Your sparkle is always within you and shines brightest when you spread love, joy, and kindness. Never let anything dim your sparkle. I’m so glad I didn’t let my own self-doubt about this story hold me back from bringing it to life because it started a new and exciting stage of my writing career.
