Adopt-a-Goat: Restoring the Peninsula, One Bite at a Time By Louise Olfarnes-Digby Manager of Communications, Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy
At the heart of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy’s mission is the care and restoration of the Peninsula’s natural landscapes—and that begins with removing invasive weeds that crowd out native species and increase fire danger. By reducing hazardous fuel loads, the Conservancy creates safer, healthier habitats where drought-tolerant native plants can thrive.
One eco-friendly—and delightfully fun—tool in this effort is goat grazing. With help from our generous supporters, the Conservancy brings in goat herds to restoration sites where they feast on invasive weeds like fennel, tumbleweed, and acacia. These goats naturally clear large areas without the use of heavy machinery or herbicides, helping to prepare the land for the return of native plants and wildlife.
Each spring, donors who participate in the Adopt-a-Goat campaign play a direct role in this transformation. A gift of $200 helps fund one goat for half a week, while $500 supports a full week of grazing. Every donation helps make space for native wildflowers and shrubs that provide essential habitat for threatened birds and other species.
As a special thank you, Adopt-a-Goat donors are invited to an exclusive photo session with the goats. On May 4th, supporters gathered at Lunada Canyon on the Agua Amarga Reserve to meet the hungry goats in action—a rewarding morning filled with smiles, snapshots, and stewardship.
Join us next spring to make a difference on the Peninsula. Bring your family or friends and be a part of this unique and impactful restoration effort!
