Healthy Ordering Out…By: Corry Matthews, M.S.

Yes, you can still order take-out and delivery from many of your favorite Palos Verdes based restaurants, and they would love it if you did.  However, many believe that eating out isn’t healthy and should only be a treat once in a while.  As a nutritionist, I disagree.  I believe eating out can offer a great balance, prevent boredom and help you stick the course on your healthy goals.  Please keep in mind, there are a few rules, otherwise we will naturally gravitate to the items that we wouldn’t cook at home or eat on a regular basis.

Here are a couple guidelines to keep in mind.

Protein!  When ordering your meal, first think of your protein source.  If you are vegetarian, or vegan, same goes for you, what protein will be the base of your dish?  Fish, chicken, steak, beans, quinoa, eggs – there are many great options.  Next, think about how this protein is cooked – your best option will always be grilled or baked without added oil.  Keep the deep frying or sautéing for your treat meal.

Vegetables!  What great veggies can you add?  Ordering from a restaurant allows us to try veggies that we might never prepare in our own house.  Get a little variety and try something new.  A chef can take boring broccoli and with a few amazing spices it becomes the best thing you have ever tried.  This also goes for salads – they don’t have to just be your typical lettuce, tomato and cucumber.

Carbohydrates!  See…I didn’t skip those, but these are where you need to be careful with your options.  We all know those multiple servings of bread aren’t doing our waistline and good, but potatoes, rice and many pastas can be a great addition to a well-rounded meal.

A few more tips:

  • Ask for all dressings on the side.  This allows you to add them.

  • Choose clear over creamy, always.

  • If you are trying to something new, ask about ingredients or sourcing if you have allergies.

  • Simple is always best.
