My Ocean Friends

By Photographer and Contributor Brenda Cash

When I dedicated my life to professional photography, I had no idea the amount of hard work that was actually entailed. When I have time to shoot for myself, I do what I can to take as much happiness from it as possible, because the next wave of demand is right around the corner. What do I do to maximize my window of joy? I get out on a boat and reconnect with my friends from the sea, the dolphins.

The alarm goes off a little early. Waking up can be tough after three weeks of working non-stop, but the dolphins make it worth it.

Stepping onto the boat requires modest fare, and a cup of coffee. As the vessel departs for deep, open ocean the cameras come out in preparation. It isn’t long before the first pod of Bottlenose dolphins greet my fellow passengers. These coastal Bottlenose like to hug coastlines, showing us their surfing prowess in the breaking waves.

As the boat progresses towards the Catalina coastline I happen to glance back at our wake and catch a glimpse of a Bottlenose dolphin leaping out of the ocean some 15 feet then making a big, splashy touchdown. My heart starts to race, my eyes searching, trying to anticipate next moves. The excitement is palpable and cheers ring out with each acrobatic display.

No trip is ever the same twice and the fortuitous pictures, with the challenge of getting the right shot on a moving, rolling vessel, leave a sense of completion complimented with well-earned exhaustion.

Back home now, I take a minute to relax and reflect before I dive into the hundreds of pictures of my friends from the ocean, the Bottlenose dolphin.
