History of the Tusk

By the President of the Palos Verdes Historical Society, Dana Graham

During the past year, the Palos Verdes Historical Society has been busy behind the scenes, preparing for the time when everything opens back up. The latest project was to make arrangements with the Peninsula Center Library for display of a fossilized Mammoth tusk that was discovered in 1927 near Malaga Cove Plaza. A big thank you to board member Ann Hugh for making this contact.

Board member and paleontologist Joe Cocke estimates that this mammoth was about 13 feet high at the shoulder, so the term mammoth definitely applied. This is the same species that was found at the La Brea Tar Pits. There have been numerous such fossils excavated in Palos Verdes in the last 100 or so years. Board members Dwight Abbott and Allen Lee have done a beautiful job restoring the display for public viewing. Be sure to stop by the Peninsula Center Library to see this rare find.

President Dana Graham said "With things looking like they will be opening back up, this is an exciting time at the PV Historical Society. We have numerous items of great community interest and historical significance that we would like to put on public display, such as some of the original models Frank Vanderlip had made for his mansion and other buildings he and Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr, envisioned for different area of Palos Verdes, and many other items. They are currently in storage awaiting appropriate venues for public display, so we welcome any suggestions. The mammoth tusk is just the initial one.

"Board member Lianne LaReine is also planning a series of public events related to Palos Verdes history. Some of you may remember her from the Peninsula Seniors and PV Library lecture series"
