Unicorn Lovers Unite - Happy National Unicorn Day!

By Sheri Fink

Confession: I’m a lifelong unicorn fan. I secretly adored them even when I started high school and it wasn’t “cool” to like mythical creatures anymore. When I got married, I even had a mermaid-unicorn cake and a unicorn at my wedding. When I wrote The Little Unicorn, it felt like the culmination of many years of loving unicorns. While traveling with my book, I was delighted to discover that the love of unicorns is still alive and well in the new generation of young readers. My love of unicorns has led me to attend the most magical events and met the most fascinating people.

One of my favorite books as young child was Leo the Lop by Stephen Cosgrove. He is most well-known for his unicorn book, Morgan and Me. A few years ago, my husband and I were traveling back from appearances in the Bay Area and stopped at a restaurant on the way home. They had an elaborate gift shop and while we were browsing, I came across an entire section of books by Stephen Cosgrove.

I was delighted to discover Leo the Lop hiding in the rack and purchased it. I told the clerk my story about loving his books as a kid, and she said that he’s a very nice man who delivered the books himself. I was intrigued by that and decided to write him an email of appreciation (fan letter) when I got home. To my surprise, he wrote a lovely and encouraging note back to me less than five minutes later! I was so happy about it that I posted it on my Fan page, and one of my friends direct messaged me that he’s her dad! What a small world.

Fast forward a year or so later, and I find out that there’s an annual Unicorn Festival in Colorado. It’s a two-day, outdoor event in which people come together to celebrate everything magical, including fairies, mermaids, dragons, and unicorns. Guess who the guest of honor was? None other than the amazing Stephen Cosgrove! I wanted to attend so badly, but I already had author events booked for that weekend. Luckily for me, the dates the following year worked, and I traveled to Denver to headline the Unicorn Festival, just like one of my heroes did the year before. I even got to appear on the Denver 9 News as a mermaidicorn (a mermaid-unicorn)!

I received word a few weeks ago that Stephen Cosgrove and I will be co-headlining the next Unicorn Festival, and I couldn’t be more excited. I’m deeply honored and can’t wait to meet him in person. His books played an important role in my personal development as a child, and I hope that my books will continue to help kids in the same way. It’s going to be a very special weekend.

My best-selling book, The Little Unicorn, is about a rainbow unicorn that lives in an enchanted forest powered by the magic of her unicorn sparkle. But when she mysteriously loses her sparkle, the magic within her and of the forest starts to disappear. She sets off on a journey to rediscover her sparkle only to end up finding it in the place she least expected but perhaps secretly knew all along. I wrote the social-emotional learning book to empower kids to learn not to seek validation outside of themselves and to instead develop their inner confidence.

The message of the story is that just like the Little Unicorn, you can create magic when you believe in yourself and cherish your friends. Your sparkle is always within you and shines brightest when you spread love, joy, and kindness. Never let anything dim your sparkle.
