Holistic Health Four-Step

By Shelley Stockwell-Nicholas, PhD (Excerpt from Dr. Shelley’s book “Thrive”)

Steve Jobs– Founder of Apple Computers and Pixar– said, “At 17, I read; ‘If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.’ Since then, I’ve looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself; ‘If today is my last day, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’”

It doesn’t take a PhD to take more loving care of you… that’s because your “ME, MYSELF and I” is at your service and ready and willing to respond to what you think, say and do. These four-steps keep you on top of the ground instead of pushing up daisies.

STEP 1. INTENTION.

How you perceive and believe creates how you proceed. Ask your Inner Knower (your wise beyond wise self…) “Am I willing to be my very best … now… today?” An affirmative “yes” sets your intention for more energy.  Even if life throws you a curveball, take your best swing at it. You still can make it to home base. Loving self-care brings you up from a down spell.

STEP 2. CHILLAX and BREATHE.

You bloom afresh with every breath. Sit back; relax. IN-JOY and OUT-JOY your magnificent relaxation. Smile on yourself. Smile all over yourself. Smell, taste, feel, hear and see each easy breath. You deserve a break today!

STEP 3. MINDFUL FOCUS.

“Why do you stare at the freezer?

“It said  ’concentrate’ on the orange juice.”

Think about your body, mind and emotion as your amazing best friend and home away from home. Then engage in a get-down self-chat. Your all-knowing self easily communicates helpful, nourishing plans, so listen.

ASK: “What can I do today to be 10% happier and healthier?”

Now listen, listen, listen to your answer. Do you tell yourself, “Be more optimistic? Get more sleep? Eat nourishing food? Move more? Drink more water? Smile? Stop taking in poison? Make new friends?” You are what you eat. Healthy food is fuel that makes you laugh and feel good.

If you face a health challenge, put aside any labels and ask the authority of YOU –yourself; “What’s truly going on here?”  “What’s the best way for me to embrace well-being?” Your answer points you in the best direction.

STEP 4. BE PRO-ACTIVE.

Your mind is a garden; you reap what you sow. After all, is said and done; say less and do more. If you need to chill: chill. If you need to be more active; be more active. If you need more love and laughter; seek more love and laughter. You know yourself best, so take your own advice and do the right thing.

5. AFFIRM EXCELLENT HEALTH: “I embrace my optimum mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. My actions and reactions focus on joy and well-being. I think, feel and act in positive and healthy ways. My attitudes and beliefs are healthy. I take time to consider all my options and the benefits and any potential harm. I do the right thing for my body. I’m in alignment with my core values. I’m happy and grateful to be alive.”
