There are several reasons for the residents of the Palos Verdes Peninsula to celebrate, as there are four important anniversaries this year.

This year is the 100-year anniversary of Palos Verdes Estates. The city was established in 1923 as a planned community. It was developed by the Palos Verdes Project, a subsidiary of the wealthy American banker, philanthropist, and land developer Frank A. Vanderlip. Inspired by the natural beauty of the peninsula, Vanderlip envisioned creating an exclusive residential area that harmoniously blended with the surrounding landscape.

The development of Palos Verdes Estates aimed to create a distinctive community that incorporated architectural and landscaping guidelines to preserve the area's natural beauty and ensure a high standard of living. Architectural firm Olmsted Brothers, renowned for their work on projects like Central Park in New York City, were hired to design the master plan. They meticulously planned the layout of the city, taking into account the contours of the land, ocean views, and the preservation of green spaces.

The development emphasized wide, curving streets that followed the natural topography, allowing residents to enjoy stunning ocean views and a sense of privacy. Strict architectural guidelines were established to maintain a cohesive aesthetic, promoting Spanish and Mediterranean-style architecture, with red-tile roofs, stucco exteriors, and lush gardens.

To protect the natural environment, restrictions were placed on the removal of trees and the use of earth tones for exterior paint colors. The vision was to create a community that embraced the beauty of its surroundings and promoted a high quality of life.

Palos Verdes Estates quickly became an affluent community, attracting residents who sought an idyllic coastal lifestyle. The city's development continued over the years, with additional neighborhoods and amenities being added, such as the Palos Verdes Golf Club, equestrian trails, and community parks.

Today, Palos Verdes Estates remains a sought-after residential area, known for its stunning homes, picturesque landscapes, and panoramic ocean views. The city's commitment to preserving its natural beauty and architectural integrity is evident, making it a unique and cherished place to live.

In addition to PVE, Rancho Palos Verdes is also celebrating an anniversary, its 50th. Rancho Palos Verdes was founded in 1973. The history of the area traces back to the Rancho de los Palos Verdes land grant, which was granted to the Sepulveda family by the Mexican government in the early 19th century.

In the mid-20th century, the land underwent significant changes as various developers sought to transform it into a residential community. In the 1950s and 1960s, extensive development took place, with the creation of housing tracts and infrastructure. However, it wasn't until 1973 that Rancho Palos Verdes was officially incorporated as a city.

The incorporation was the result of a desire among the residents of the area to have local control over land use, planning, and community development. With the establishment of the city, Rancho Palos Verdes gained the ability to govern itself and make decisions that would shape its future.

As a relatively new city, Rancho Palos Verdes has seen continued development over the years, maintaining the unique character and natural beauty of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The city is known for its breathtaking coastal views, rugged cliffs, and expansive open spaces. Efforts have been made to preserve and protect the area's natural landscapes, including the establishment of the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve, which encompasses vast acres of coastal habitat and trails for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Rancho Palos Verdes has become a desirable residential community, offering a serene and picturesque environment for its residents. The city continues to focus on maintaining a high quality of life, preserving its natural resources, and promoting responsible development.

The founding of Rancho Palos Verdes in 1973 marked a significant milestone in the history of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, establishing a distinct city with its own local government and identity. It reflects the aspirations of its residents to create a community that embraces the unique beauty of the area while fostering a sense of unity and belonging.

It is also a milestone anniversary for the Original Red Onion Restaurant, currently run by Jeff Earle, celebrating 60 years of business.

Jeff Earle's family has been immersed in the restaurant business for four generations, tracing back to his great-grandmother, Catalina Castillo. Catalina operated a dining counter for miners and cowhands along the Sonora-Arizona border during the early 1900s. From humble beginnings, the Earle family's ventures gradually evolved, encompassing a series of diners and lunch counters that ultimately led to the establishment of the first Red Onion Restaurant in 1949, situated in Inglewood.

Within the cozy confines of this original 19-seat diner, Jeff's grandfather, Harry, along with his father, Bart, and uncle, Don Earle, employed Catalina's cherished recipes to craft a cuisine that would become a beloved fixture in Southern California life for the next half-century. Red Onion rapidly expanded, with numerous locations popping up across the region, becoming a cherished dining experience for many.

Today, only the Palos Verdes Red Onion stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of this culinary institution. Since its inception in August 1963, the restaurant has been graced with the unwavering support of three generations of families and friends. Stepping inside, one cannot help but be captivated by the walls adorned with historical relics, fading photographs, and cherished mementos, encapsulating the rich tapestry of memories and camaraderie that permeate the establishment.

With a deep appreciation for its landmark past, Jeff Earle, carrying the torch of tradition, embarks on a mission to preserve the Red Onion's heritage while providing new generations of patrons with an enticing array of delectable dishes and refreshing libations. The menu showcases a wide variety of culinary delights, accompanied by warm and attentive service, ensuring a delightful dining experience for all who pass through its doors.

As the Original Red Onion Restaurant in Rolling Hills Estates continues to thrive, it upholds its enduring place in the community, celebrating the cherished history, traditions, and the pleasure of shared meals. It remains a testament to the Earle family's dedication and the enduring bonds forged around the table.

Last but not least is another 60-year anniversary. The Mary and Joseph Retreat Center, nestled in Rancho Palos Verdes, was founded in 1963 with the intention of providing a serene and contemplative space for spiritual retreats, educational programs, and personal growth.

The center's establishment was inspired by the vision of the Daughters of Mary and Joseph, a Catholic religious congregation dedicated to serving the needs of the community. They recognized the importance of creating a peaceful sanctuary where individuals could seek solace, reflection, and renewal.

The founders carefully selected a picturesque location amidst the natural beauty of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The center's sprawling grounds encompass rolling hills, lush gardens, and breathtaking ocean views, creating a tranquil environment conducive to introspection and connection with nature.

Since its inception, the Mary and Joseph Retreat Center has welcomed individuals of various faiths, spiritual backgrounds, and walks of life. It offers a wide range of retreat programs, workshops, and events that cater to the diverse needs and interests of its guests. These include guided meditation sessions, silent retreats, wellness programs, educational seminars, and spiritual retreats led by experienced facilitators and guest speakers.

The center's facilities include comfortable accommodations, meeting spaces, chapels, gardens, and walking trails. These amenities are thoughtfully designed to support personal reflection, group activities, and communal gatherings. The center also provides delicious meals made with care and consideration for nourishing the body and soul.

Throughout the years, the Mary and Joseph Retreat Center has remained committed to its mission of fostering spiritual growth, inner healing, and personal transformation. It has become a cherished destination for individuals seeking respite from the demands of daily life, desiring to deepen their spiritual connection, or simply seeking a peaceful setting to engage in self-reflection.

The founding of the Mary and Joseph Retreat Center in 1963 marks the beginning of a rich history and enduring legacy.
