The Spirit of the Season: Inside Sandpipers’ Enduring Tradition of Giving Back
Since 1931, the Sandpipers organization has stood as a pillar of volunteerism in the South Bay. From humble beginnings providing food and gifts to struggling families during the Depression, the organization has grown into a broad network of philanthropic programs serving thousands each year.
As the holidays approach, Sandpipers is running several key initiatives:
Holiday Basket Program - The heart of their mission and their oldest program, still going strong nearly a century later. As part of the Holiday Basket program, the Annual Shoe Drive ensures that each child receives a new pair of shoes. Thanks to the generosity of the community, Sandpipers provides more than 250 children with Kohl’s gift certificates to select their own pair - a simple gift that brings dignity, confidence, and joy.
Holiday Homes Tour - For over 30 years, this fundraiser has showcased beautifully decorated homes across the South Bay, as well as a curated Holiday Market featuring local artisans. The Tour draws over 2,500 attendees annually and raises over $140,000 with all proceeds going directly back to Sandpipers philanthropic programs
Sugarplum Gift Drive - In partnership with the Department of Children and Family Services, Sandpipers collects gifts for foster children across LA. Help them in reaching their goal of donating 1,500 toys by selecting a gift ($30–$40 value) from the Amazon wish list and bringing a little joy to a child in need.
These programs reflect the core values Sandpipers has held since their founding: compassion, community, and camaraderie.
