Beth Bowen - Abstract Artist By Valerie Electra Smith-Griffin

“Abstract art is not the creation of another reality but the true version of reality”

Piet Mondrian.

If a person were a living canvas, Beth Bowen would be the art, painted with the brush of her astounding personal and professional transformation that grabbed her by surprise, and invited her to a party of immense gratification.

Bowen, who is Palos Verdes Peninsula-based, was drawn to crafts as a child, with artistic family-ties to her Grandmother, a Pebble-Beach resident, who created ocean and landscape pieces. In the runaway smash Sci-Fi series, “Stranger Things”, The Keys were machines built by the Russians to open a doorway between worlds. For Beth, her “Keys” were YouTube and painting tutorials that jolted awake the sleeping giant of her secret gift as an abstract artist, and opened an emerging world of a prosperous future in art. Bowen launched her career with her first exhibit: “Transcend”, at the Substrate Gallery in Hollywood, California, that proved to be the creative birth of her inner happiness. Her road to success continued to Gabriel Fine Arts of London to the exclusive Art Basel, considered to be the equivalent of an artist’s Academy Award.

Abstract art allows for introspection that lacks a narrative or basis in reality, and permits the viewer to escape the confines of “what is”, and allows for a remarkable journey into the unknown or “what could be.” Consider it an artistic version of The Beatles song, “Magical Mystery Tour”.

Bowen possesses an extensive background in acting, modeling, television, film, commercials and print campaigns and starred in Bravo TV’s, “There Goes the Motherhood” and, in regards to being a parent, she attributes her children for her continual motivation and inspiration in her artistic endeavors, with awareness of her work primarily through social media and fellow artist collaborations. Word of Bowen’s art, much like her fast-learning painting abilities, was akin to a lightning bolt.

For many artists, a professional career in their passion is frequently a toss of the dice, but Bowen was a delightful exception to this reality. “Art choose me. Initially, I was using art therapeutically, then it progressed far beyond my dreams and expectations. My art journey has been a feast, not a famine.” Bowen commented on the role of an artist in society, women in particular: “Females are entirely under-represented, and one of my goals is to pave the way for female artists.”

Bowen was introduced to Eddie Donaldson, who’s been associated with major street artists and Los Angeles artists, since the LA grassroots street art scene hit the map. Thanks to Donaldson, the stars aligned for Bowen who remarked, “Eddie knows what is best for me and my career, his knowledge of success is astounding. I couldn’t have achieved any of my present success without him, or my team, and I am forever grateful.”

Bowen’s works tend to comment on contemporary social or political issues such as anti-cancel culture as represented by a Dr. Seuss piece. She accomplishes her artwork by greeting the day very early and carving out personal time, as doing so prevents distractions and allows her to focus solely on the project at hand. One of her favorite mixed media pieces that she created is, “The Social Dilemma”.

Wassily Kandinsky, (1866-1944), who holds the title of “Grandfather of Abstract Art”, strongly felt, “Form itself, even if completely abstract…has its own inner sound.” However, based on her phenomenal success, Bowen seems entitled to join the crowd of famous faces and, although she does admire the American abstract painter, Jackson Pollack, she strongly feels, “Rather than look to other artists, my own achievements have greatly inspired me.”

Altruism runs deep in Bowen’s outlook on life as underscored by her art donations to non-profit events that included: “Ashes For Hope”, benefiting the victims of the Malibu/Woolsey fires, “Walk With Sally”, that supports children of loved ones affected by cancer, “Beach Cities Swimming Club” of Manhattan Beach, “KidSave”, a support and adoption organization for foster children and “Toast on the Coast”, an event hosted by the Peninsula Education Foundation.

From an unbelievable scant career span of a few years, 2018-2022, Bowen’s exhibits have taken her from Hollywood, California, to The Louvre, Paris, France, to Vienna, Austria. Her dazzling group exhibitions have decorated galleries both locally and world-wide, and her extensive list marks her as a distinguished diamond in the art world. Speaking of diamonds, renowned American singer-songwriter and musician, Neil Diamond, purchased her creation, “Your Life Your Canvas”. Group exhibitions include, to name a few…

The Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist, George Bernard Shaw believed, “You use a glass mirror to see your face, and you use works of art to see your soul.” Bowen offered her philosophy that reflects her soul, and is rooted in positivity. “We have only one life, but we can recreate it many times. We can start over.”
