Banning's First Landing: 3rd Annual Celebration

America's Port® was born as the Port of Los Angeles on September 25, 1858. To celebrate the event, Phineas Banning invited a large number of guests to "assist" with the first landing. As the Los Angeles Star newspaper glowingly described it:

"The ceremony of inauguration consisted in towing a line of barges, containing passengers and freight to the landing place. In ascending the channel, all hands, the ladies included, assisted in hauling the hawser, and when the passengers were landed, and the first bale of goods, the company united in wishing prosperity to Captain Banning and the New Town, pledging the same in bumpers of 'sparkling California'. Afterwards, a sumptuous entertainment was provided for the guests; the next couple of days were devoted to pleasing amusements of yachting and fishing. This was one of the most agreeable parties of the season; and was conducted with that liberality and hospitality for which Captain Banning was so famous."

In commemoration of the birth of America's Port®, the Wilmington Historical Society is hosting the 3rd Annual Banning's First Landing on Saturday, September 27th, 2025 with a sunset cruise on the Johnson tall ships (provided by the Los Angeles Maritime Institute). On the three-hour cruise you will enjoy close-up views of the nation's busiest port, with sights of active vessels, cargo terminals, cranes and notable landmarks, including the Vincent Thomas Bridge, Wilmington Clock Tower and twinkling harbor lights while enjoying great food, drinks, special guests, and live modern-classical music.

Your presence would mean the world to us as we come together to celebrate and support the Wilmington Historical Society. History plays a pivotal role in understanding the bigger picture and where we fit in! Seating is limited. Get tickets at the link!
